Sadly with cuts by the UK government to public services and charities (in fact to all the places where they are most needed by the most vulnerable in society) – homelessness is going to increase massively. Homeless families and children will increase, already making up a high percentage of the homeless population.
But charities like the Pilion Trust may no longer have adequate funding for vital work in putting clients through rehab or mental health councilling which can make the difference in helping them to find accommodation, take courses and work towards careers.
And at the same time the government fund war, buy weapons, and sell weapons keeping dictators in power. I cannot watch this happen! There are thousands of us speaking out already hoping to be heard.
Westminster Council are also trying to implement a law banning sitting or lying down in the street (or any public places) as well as banning soup runs for the homeless (in fact all distribution of free refreshments). So on 2nd of April there’s a planned demonstration – ALL LIE DOWN IN WESTMINSTER in protests against this inhumanity!
Alone, nobody has impact. But if there are enough of us all speaking out we can have some impact.
This is their proposed by-law:
According to westminster Council: EXTENT
2. These Byelaws apply to those areas in the City of Westminster identified in the Schedule and shown edged in red on the plan attached.
LYING DOWN AND SLEEPING ETC
3. (1) No person shall lie down or sleep in or on any public place. (2) No person shall at any time deposit any materials used or intended to beused as bedding in or on any public place.
DISTRIBUTION OF FREE REFRESHMENT
4. (1) No person shall distribute any free refreshment in or on any public place. (2) No person shall knowingly permit any person to distribute any free refreshment in or on any public place.
This cannot be allowed!!!
I will not be a cow on the Capitalists’ Farm,
Milked to fund their wars while keeping dictators in arms.
I want out of this system, there are other wars to fight;
Fighting to end poverty, upholding human rights!
An update on this! We had our peaceful demonstration in Westminster, which went well and hopefully made the point. But we’ll have to keep up the pressure to prevent these kinds of abuses and injustices happening.
Further to the protests…on the day of the Royal Wedding, the law has been implemented – it is now in place 😦 . And what timing (I am not the only one to find this ironic). The law is implemented the very night that hundreds of people camped out in Westminster excitedly waiting for the Royal Wedding of HRH Prince William and Katherine Middleton…with sleeping bags duvets and full night gear.
So the Met says: “No person shall lie down or sleep in or on any public place. No person shall at any time deposit any materials used or intended to be used as bedding in or on any public place. No person shall distribute any free refreshment in or on any public place. No person shall knowingly permit any person to distribute any free refreshment in or on any public place.” …UNLESS CAMPING OUT FOR THE ROYAL WEDDING!
